Title:                                     Library Media Specialist

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Studies preferred.
  • Current Oklahoma School Library Media Specialist certification.
  • Possesses highly developed interpersonal, group, communication and organizational skills.

 

Reports to:                         Site principal; may also consult the director of Information           Technology Services.

 

Job Goals:

  • As an information specialist, develops an effective library media program in support of the school’s mission that provides access to information and resources in a wide variety of formats for all students and staff.
  • As an instructional partner and consultant, coordinates with teachers their students’ learning experiences that utilize a wide variety of resources to assist with student mastery of subject and grade-level standards.
  • As a teacher, integrates information skills into collaboratively planned and presented lessons that meet the objectives of the school’s curriculum.
  • As a program administrator, manages and takes responsibility for the care, development and use of the library media center, its resources and policies to maximize the school library media program’s effectiveness.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  • Systematically develops a collection of resources that support the school’s curriculum goals through appropriate evaluation, selection and requisition procedures.
  • Encourages access to the library media center and its resources through the proper management of an accurate and efficient organization and retrieval system.
  • Maintains an accurate and up-to-date record of the library media center’s holdings.
  • Assists teachers and students in meeting curriculum goals by identifying information available in and outside the library media center.
  • Plans collaboratively with teachers on a regular basis to develop resource-based units of instruction and activities that integrate information literacy skills, such as accessing, evaluating and communicating information, into the teaching of the classroom curriculum.
  • Participates in school, department and grade-level curriculum development.
  • Interprets laws and district policies regarding information sharing and serves as a resource to administrators, teachers, students and the community on issues regarding copyright and intellectual freedom. 
  • Takes a leadership role in promoting with teachers the effective use of teaching strategies involving technologies and media.
  • Provides instruction to teachers and students concerning the use of technology to access and use information resources available outside the library media center.
  • Takes steps through a variety of methods to motivate students and teachers to read for pleasure and develop an appreciation for literature.
  • Works directly with teachers using a wide variety of techniques to present collaboratively planned and executed lessons, activities and resource-based units of instruction.
  • Administers the budget for library media resources.
  • Supervises library media assistants and volunteers in the performance of their duties.
  • Promotes the library media program through ongoing communication with administrators, teachers, students and patrons.
  • Reads professional journals, participates in staff development activities, joins professional organizations and visits model sites as required and offered, to stay informed of the latest technology and trends in education and school library media programs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned to benefit the library media program.
  • To ensure continuity of services, remote work may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for remote work will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for remote work will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.

 

Terms of Employment:           Nine months.

 

Evaluation:                             Performance of this job will be evaluated annually

                                                                  in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy

                                                                  on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
