                                                        SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

 

 

TITLE:                                    Educational Sign Language Interpreter

 

QUALIFICATIONS:             1. Completed an interpreter training program, and

  1. Earned a bachelor’s degree; or
  2. Worked three (3) or more years in an area related to the field of

    deaf education, and

  1. Show evidence of at least one of the following credentials:
  2. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification,
  3. National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level IV,
  4. Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III,
  5. Signed Exact English Level 3.5 or better, or
  6. Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better in assigned level (Elementary or Secondary).

 

REPORTS TO:                       Special Education Teacher and/or Principal

 

JOB GOAL:                            Assist teachers to provide appropriate education and related

services for students with deafness or hearing impairments.

 

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Provide interpreting and/or transliterating services for deaf persons and hearing persons in the educational environment.

 

  1. Facilitate communication through use of sign language, spoken English, cultural mediation, and knowledge about accessibility.

 

  1. Interpret within social and academic settings;
    1. Direct and overheard conversations,
    2. Class instruction, lectures, and tests,
    3. Assemblies, field trips, etc.

 

  1. Keep all assignment-related information strictly confidential; encourage staff members to collaborate instead of using the interpreter as a source of information.

 

  1. If requested, give information to the IEP team about the student’s skills regarding use of interpreting services;
    1. Do not give include opinions about the student’s academic or social progress.
    2. Refer questions about improvement, grades, etc. to the teacher.

 

  1. Render the message faithfully, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker, using the language most readily understood by the person(s) being served.

 

  1. Never counsel, advise, or interject personal opinions into interpreted situations;
    1. A qualified teacher is responsible for any instruction, discipline or evaluations that may be necessary.
    2. Responsibilities such as supervising, disciplining, and correcting students are inappropriate and cause confusion about the interpreter’s role.

 

  1. Accept assignments using discretion with regard to skill, setting, and the consumers involved.

 

  1. Function in a manner appropriate to each interpreted situation, demonstrating professional appearance, conduct, and promptness.

 

  1. Strive to further knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field.

 

  1. Strive to maintain high professional standards by virtue of professional membership, certification, and ethical practices.

 

  1. Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting or transliterating.

 

  1. Educate consumers about using interpreting services and providing visual access to deaf and hard of hearing students.

 

  1. Assist in education of staff about note-takers and closed captioned materials.

 

  1. Follow district absentee policies when unable to interpret.

 

  1. Required certification must be maintained and kept current by the interpreter at all times.

 

  1. Other such duties as assigned by the teacher or the principal.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Nine months basis.  Salary to be established by the Board.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with

                            provisions of the Board’s policy of Evaluation of Support Personnel.
